'The Middle East is a powder keg, and the fire is approaching': Assad says

Syrian President Bashar Assad, who has largely remained in the shadows amid allegations that his regime killed more than 1,000 people in a chemical weapons attack, claimed in an interview with a French newspaper that his accusers — including the White House and the French government — have no evidence.

"Anyone accusing must give proof," Assad told Le Figaro in interview excerpts published online Monday. "We have challenged the United States and France to come forward with a single proof."

When asked how he would respond to potential military strikes against key Syrian targets, Assad suggested that the region will spiral into chaos, saying: "The Middle East is a powder keg, and the fire is approaching today."

"We should not only talk about a Syrian riposte but what will happen after the first strike. No one knows what will happen. Everyone will lose control of the situation once the powder keg explodes. Chaos and extremism will spread. The risk of a regional war exists."

“We should not only talk about a Syrian riposte but what will happen after the first strike. No one knows what will happen. Everyone will lose control of the situation once the powder keg explodes. Chaos and extremism will spread. The risk of a regional war exists.”

That is certainly more presidential than the drivel
and emotional manipulation we have heard from Kerry
and Obama.

Powder kegs explode because they’re contained ... I hate to see anyone die but it seems the answer to me is to split that powder keg open , let it burn rather than explode ,,, lets get 3 , 4 or 5 factions in there killing each other for their pitiful piece of “turf” ,,, neutralize them but not with our troops.

Obama is doing this because he doesn’t have the guts
to make a preemptive strike on IRAN. He knows the only
way he can justify that action is to get us involved
in a Syrian fiasco. When he has enough American casualties
then he will claim he had no choice.

By that time however he will have brought the war
back home.

Assad is no charmer and Bush wanted to go into Syria and get the Iraqi chemical weapons long ago. Probably most of those weapons are no longer useable, but still, Bush was right at that time.

Both Saddam and Assad were/are dictators. The problem with Saddam was that he definitely had expansionist dreams and was funding terrorism in other places that affected the US. Assad probably has expansionist dreams, but like Saddam, he’s a fairly secular dictator because he himself is a member of a small Muslim sect (Allawite) considered heretical by the Shiites and the Sunnis.

So he’s been tolerant of Christians and also of minority Muslim groups, and he’s not really doing anything to us - except resisting Obama’s al Qaeda minions. So for that offense, Bambi’s going to set off WWIII?

Putin is saying the same thing as Assad. Russian ships are moving into the area. Russians are manning Syrian defense sites.

Congress didn’t give a damn what the people thought about obamacare. They still don’t since they continue to fund it. And they don’t give a damn what the people think about going to war with Syria.

“Russians are manning Syrian defense sites.”

If that is true the Russian hardware and software may be as effective as advertised. Not a happy thought...

It was the short haired woman on Fox who reported on the Russian ships and soldiers in country. I think she’s at the Pentagon. She’s got some good sources.

The probable reason they are going to Congress is because there is a real risk of a global war.
