Insight: As Obama blinks on Syria, Israel, Saudis make common cause

If President Barack Obama has disappointed Syrian rebels by deferring to Congress before bombing Damascus, he has also dismayed the United States' two main allies in the Middle East.

Israel and Saudi Arabia have little love for each other but both are pressing their mutual friend in the White House to hit President Bashar al-Assad hard. And both do so with one eye fixed firmly not on Syria but on their common adversary - Iran.

Israel's response to Obama's surprise move to delay or even possibly cancel air strikes made clear that connection: looking soft on Assad after accusing him of killing hundreds of people with chemical weapons may embolden his backers in Tehran to develop nuclear arms, Israeli officials said. And if they do, Israel may strike Iran alone, unsure Washington can be trusted.

The USA had better start taking care of the USA first, our borders, our own security, our fiscal position, our prosperity, our citizenry, our Constitutional rights, and our democracy ...... because if we lose all of that these other countries / allies that appear to depend upon us will be completely on their own.

In my own little world I take care of my family, my home and my business before I run around giving to charity.

I’m not sure I believe this. The last thing Israel needs is a half-*ssed attack on Syria that would accomplish nothing but stir things up.

And there was an article here a few days ago saying that the Saudi King was against Obama’s plan.

And the Arab League came out against it.

How can Israel ever believe that Obama can be trusted? When Obama said he had Israel's back, he meant he would hold Israel's back as the knife is thrust into it.

Ironically, it appears Obama is making Israel and the Arab gulf states closer to peace among them because they despise Obama so much. Maybe he deserves his Nobel Peace prize afterall /s

“The USA had better start taking care of the USA first...”

We have no friends in the middle-east. We have countries that find us useful; for their defense, to purchase their over-priced oil, or as a stooge who can be led around by the nose when it is advantageous to them. The Saudis supplied the 9-11 terrorists. Israel would have no problem turning on us like an ungrateful dog if it suited them (think U.S.S. Liberty or Jonathan Pollard). We need to let that mess work itself out. We can pick up the pieces later if we need anything.

Excellent point. I for one am getting tired of people screaming about how orcs and goblins will jump out of flaming sinkholes, supernatural brass bands will start playing, and people will self-launch into space if Israel were to cease to exist.

They may be somewhat of an ally in that cesspit of the world but as you have pointed out, they have gone their own way before, to our detriment.

And lets not forget those people have a substantial nuclear arsenal and have said they will use them at their own discretion. Very well, its their choice. But as great power confers equal responsibility, they`ll need to deal with the consequences and we sure as s#!t don`t need to follow them into a suicidal all out nuclear war.
