A Saturday night triple-bill in the Seaport featured swirling lights, throbbing techno and dangerous drugs that sent three young men to the hospital but no Boston police, despite a vow just 24 hours earlier by Mayor Thomas M. Menino to deploy the citys cops on the Hubs nightclubs in the wake of a young womans death.
Two of the men, who were attending the Sound Tribe Sector 9 show at Bank of America Pavilion, appeared to have ODd on a molly-type drug, according to state police the same virulently popular substance believed to have led to the death of 19-year-old Brittany Flannigan at a House of Blues techno show last week. That death prompted the mayor to call for a crackdown on club drugs.
But Boston police chose not to staff the Pavilion, which is their turf in the area a territory that has been the subject of a long-running jurisdiction battle between the state and local police. Instead, state troopers in charge of traffic details were forced to call in additional manpower to help keep order outside the concert headlined by Sound Tribe Sector 9, while other troopers who were only supposed to keep traffic flowing stepped up to assist Boston EMS workers loading ambulances.
State troopers working traffic details outside the Pavilion last night responded inside the venue property which is not their jurisdiction to assist Boston EMS with several medical incidents, including three suspected overdoses, state police spokesman David Procopio said. Because of observations troopers made of impaired behavior among concertgoers, we sent several additional troopers to the area to complement the traffic detail to help keep order. In all, MSP assisted EMTs with two overdoses of what seemed to be a ecstasy- or molly-type drug, and a third overdose of what appeared to be a hallucinogenic drug. All three young adult victims were transported to Boston hospitals.
Their conditions were unknown last night.
Multiple messages left for a spokesman for Live Nation, which owns the Pavilion, were unreturned.
Saturday nights show was touted on social media as a prime venue for rolling face slang for taking molly. Boston Police Department spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca said last night the department had decided to let the detail go unfilled and focus on neighborhoods where the priority was quelling violence and shootings.
Historically, Fiandaca said, the Pavilion has not been a venue where we have had incidents of violence or drug overdoses.
Boston police have authority inside the Pavilion and state police have authority outside one example of a murky jurisdictional map that has in recent years led to disputes over the handling of sexual assault and domestic violence cases, as well as delays in hitting bars with licensing sanctions. The BPD has sought to seize jurisdiction back.
Last week, the City Council sent a resolution to the Legislature unanimously supporting a bill that would give both BPD and state police jurisdiction in the Seaport, Southie City Councilor Bill Linehan said. State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry (D-Dorchester) said shell be reaching out this week to both law enforcement departments to convene a discussion about what were doing with the waterfront.
We depend on them, she said. I need them at the table.
Not to mention the fact that when I drive I don't want someone coming at me head on because they're zonked. That's the old your-freedom-to-swing-your-fist-ends-at-my-nose argument. OK I'm 51, and this "dance music" (played on stations like WEDX Boston, the former WFNX) is not quite my thing--if you like the techno dance trip hop whatever it's called, then fine, not for me, but they're throwing their lives away.
Howie Carr list ping. “Molly” strikes again, a drug that can cause death...and as you may have heard in NYC a festival (Electric Zoo) was cancelled after two fatalities (a man from NY state and woman from RI I think). Again I don’t want a nanny state....but maybe people should just wise the hell up and not get into these things! When a “high” means you’re DEAD.
I encourage all of the mutant utes of Boston to kill themselves by overdosing. Excellent, leaving more fresh air for the rest of us. Good riddance to societie’s trash problem!
so we needed the police there to make sure people don’t put fatal doses of substances into their own mouths.
well, what do you expect from a society with so little intellectual capacity that when we have tv commercials of a guy hanging onto the antenna of a speeding car, we have to have little writing at the bottom of the screen warning people not to do it.
Don’t want to sound like one of those old Dragnet episodes...hippies high on drugs and their baby has drowned in the tub.
Bill Gannon: “Joe....for the first time on the job, I think I’m going to be sick.”
What is “Molly”?
My son was at the Roosevelt Island, NY show this weekend. They closed the third day of the show due to two “Molly” overdose deaths. What is wrong with some kids? Who in their right mind would take something handed to them?
My son is 26 and went with 5 other friends who are straight arrows and like the rave scene & good music.
Indeed some TV reports about the deaths at the House of Blues (the concerts they have are usually anything BUT blues) and Electric Zoo in NY usually mention molly is also known as ecstacy.
Wiki.: “MDMA can induce euphoria, a sense of intimacy with others, diminished anxiety, and mild psychedelia.MDMA is criminalized in most countries...and its possession, manufacture, or sale may result in criminal prosecution... The term “mandy” or “molly” colloquially refers to MDMA in powder or crystalline form, usually implying a higher level of purity.”
It has been suggested that some of the “molly” taken may be made haphazardly. The deaths were due to overdoses. Maybe someone took the drug and didn’t “feel” anything right away...so, take a little more... and...
Yes...I think some comments I read about this suggest that the drug was made haphazardly—and maybe that plus simply overdosing is enough to cause the deaths
NY Daily News quoted the father of victim Jeffrey Russ:
>>Now there will be no grandchildren, no nieces, no nephews, no wedding, Russ heartbroken father, John Russ, told the Daily News. Everything you look forward to in life is gone because of one pill....The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Russ was taken to Harlem Hospital after Fridays concert, when he began exhibiting signs of an overdose at 3:10 a.m. He died at 3:21 a.m., cops said.

>>but they have no clue what they are doing to their bodies. This drug interferes with body’s ability to control its temperature. It’s causing core body temperature rising too high until the major organs shut down at about 42°C (107.6°F). Mix that with hot and humid weather and you are in full suicidal mode. My wife works in ICU at the hospital so she tells me that this is the second most common reason people die from “ecstasy”.
Darwin was right.... fry your body and brain.... adios brah!
Well,...we have a whole new crop of “utes” moving
in this week-end.
Right and there are still “jackasses” out there (to use the name of that MTV show) and still do it DESPITE the warnings. I remember one case of a bus full of teens going to some event and one stuck his head out some kind of skylight or roof-of-the-bus emergency exitway and when the bus went into a tunnel, he banged his head—boom, dead. “Now don’t you go stick your arms out the bus windows either!” ... “Yeah, yeah...”
