Editor,
I had to laugh when I read the letter of Aug. 28, GOP full of racist fuddy-duddies. As with most of my well-meaning friends who are Democrats, facts and reason do not seem part of their decision-making process but rather emotion and the idea that everything should be equal and fair regardless of the amount of effort an individual puts into things.
In regards to the GOP being racist, a Navy chief pointed out the following:
1) It was the Democratic Party that supported slavery and the Confederacy.
Lincoln was a Republican and it was Lincoln who freed the slaves. During the Lincoln-Douglas debates it was Lincoln who called for the end of slavery and it was Douglas who wanted it to continue.
2) The KKK was founded as a militant arm of the Democratic Party.
3) The 14th Amendment was pushed through over the objections of the Democratic Party.
4) The Civil Rights Act was pushed through Congress by the Republican Party. The Democrats tried to filibuster it. The filibuster was lead by Robert Byrd and Al Gore, Sr.

Neither statement is precisely correct.
The two men were 100% in agreement that slavery within a state was the business of that state alone. Lincoln considered slavery to be a moral wrong, but Douglas was indifferent to it.
Lincoln did not call for the immediate abolition of slavery, he called for restriction of its spread, in the calm confidence that it would eventually come to a natural end if contained. Kind of a Cold War against slavery of the 1800s.
Meanwhile, Douglas did not necessarily want slavery to continue, he just didn't care. Or claimed not to.
This attempt by Douglas to straddle the issue was an attempt to cobble together a coalition of southerners and northern anti-abolitionists. As contrasted to Lincoln's attempt to assemble a coalition of abolitionists and those opposed to the spread of slavery. Lincoln's coalition grew, that of Douglas disintegrated.
Yes, but the replies to be expected will all claim that the parties “switched sides” in the ‘60s. Now republicans are responsible for the evils of democrats past.

Lincoln’s coalition grew, that of Douglas disintegrated.
...apparently, Douglas’ coalition broke for Breckenridge, big time (72 EV’s to 12)...in a normal two man race, Douglas wins the election easily...

Nope. I've researched this. If every anti-Lincoln vote had gone to Douglas, he would have won the popular vote by a huge margin. But Lincoln would have still won the Electoral College and the presidency.
Therefore, the Republican coalition grew, that of the Democrats disintegrated. The Democrats were evil then and more evil now.
Its very difficult to realize what most of us believe isnt the truth.

A large percent of African Americans are living today in much more deadly Democratic Party imposed Segregation 2.0 today. Ghettos walled off not by red necks, but by destroyed families, multi-generational dependency and death. LBJs cynical ploy results in blacks being the victims and perpetrators of over half the murders in the U.S. when they represent only about 12% of the population.
Do you think my rhetoric is over blown? In 2011 there were 12,664 murders and 6,329 of the victims were black (and yes almost all blacks were murdered by other blacks). But from 1882 to 1968, 3,446 African Americans were lynched.
God, family, community, work and real liberal politics will but an end to the wasted lives. If you care about African American, urge them to abandon the Democrats.

This is interesting; please elaborate.
If every anti-Lincoln vote had gone to Douglas, he would have won the popular vote by a huge margin. But Lincoln would have still won the Electoral College and the presidency...
...the resulting popular vote discrepancy would have been over 950,000...20% of the total vote cast...constitutional crisis almost certainly would have ensued, and rightly so...
Excellent!
Here’s link to election results by state in 1860.
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/showelection.php?year=1860
By my count, Lincoln won absolute majorities in CT, IL, IN, IA, ME, MA, MI, MN, NH, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, and WI. In some of them it was pretty close, though. This gave him 169 electoral votes.
Since 152 EC votes were needed, Lincoln won even if all his opponents had joined behind a single candidate.
Again, as with Sherman Logan, please elaborate.
Popular vote discrepancy would have been even greater, putting Lincoln well under 40%, except that SC didn’t have a popular vote, since the state legislature appointed the electors.
Who knows what would have happened? Maybe in frustration enough states would have rallied behind the "moderate," Bell.
except that SC didnt have a popular vote, since the state legislature appointed the electors...
...the electoral college in all its antiquated glory...
Again, as with Sherman Logan, please elaborate...
...please look at the link he posted...it is elaborate enough...
