McCain has condemned threats by the likes of Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) Rand Paul (R-KY) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) to block any continuing resolution that funds Obamacare and risk a government shutdown. The senior Arizona senator said that many of the Republicans and conservatives who back the defunding effort weren't in Washington in the early 1990s when the GOP suffered a political backlash for a government shutdown.
"It is a battle that's going to go on in the Republican Party and we're going to have to have a struggle and a conversation and an open and honest debate about the direction of the Republican Party," McCain said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "And that debate needs to be held."

We've had that debate; hence the Sens. Cruz and Paul you mention; hence your dear girlfriend Linda Graham will be packing her bags next year.
Perhaps you should switch parties. That way there will be no need for a debate with your colleagues.
Voter
Will McCain be changing the name of the Republican Party to Democrat Mark II or the Socialist Lite Party?
Will McCain be changing the name of the Republican Party to Democrat Mark II or the Socialist Lite Party?
How about the Vichy Republican party?
There was no backlash in the 90s. We passed our legislation, and seat change was minimal. We lost a few in the House and won a couple in the Senate. Electorally, it was a wash. Politically, we won the issues, but took a lot of bullets in the process. The media was vicious (as it always is). That’s where McCain thinks we received backlash because he is solely tuned into how the media treats him...not how the voters respond.
BUMP!
He wouldn’t have said this unless he calculates the GOP Elite has such power they cannot lose the debate.
Yes—here are a few questions to raise in that debate.
Do you think C Christie’s actions prior to the 2012 election helped the R party in its quest to win that election?
Do you think the Colin Powell style of Republican is the right way for the Republican party going forward? By the way, he voted for the Dem presidential candidate, twice.
Do you think criticizing fellow R senators who are on the wave of a new conservative revival helps or hurts the future of the R party?
The Tea Party doesn’t seem to be your cup of tea. Why are obnoxious socialists more appealing to you than responsible, polite, traditional American Tea Party members?
Does the Dem’s embracing of hard left socialism appeal to you, personally? Do you want to be like them?
If you eliminate the conservatives from the R party, where will you pick up supporters that are not glued to the Dem party? Where are your future voters coming from?
Conservatives will do our “talking” at the primary voting booths.
Don’t make us come down there Arizona. LOL
Hear..Hear!!
I am so sick of this man I could scream..and his little dog Graham too!!
LMBO!!
Why am I not surprised this scumbag McCain would show up and issue his challenge on the communist netwrok?
The GOP has been moderated into a coma and McCain is standing on the feeding tube as he waves to the democrat party parade goosestepping to full on fascism.
Shut Up Meg(s dad).
The GOP ending their war mongering and exporting jobs would be a good start to prosper America. Taking their eyes off Wall Street and looking at Main Street is their only salvation.
We’ve already debated, you moron traitor. We don’t want RINO’s like you in the party so get the hell out!
You lost, Juan!
