KINGSTON, N.Y. -- Ismail Shabazz readily admits there was a time in his life when crime was the way.
But today the 58-year-old grandfather who describes himself as a black nationalist says he had long ago found his way pointed down a righteous path by God.
“God saved me from myself, from my criminal mentality,” Shabazz said recently.
On Sept. 10, Shabazz along with Nina Dawson and Nicky Woerner, will compete in a primary for the Democratic nomination for Ward 4 alderman. The winner will have the party’s line on the Nov. 5 election ballot.
Shabazz, who lives at 80 Prospect St., says his history and the struggle with it has given him the kind of unique insight that would be useful as a member of the Common Council in understanding Midtown issues.
Shabazz says his criminal life spanned many years, starting around age 19. At that time, Shabazz said, he learned three women were pregnant with his children.
Shabazz says he dropped out of college and became a “gang-banger, making money on the streets to care for his new family.
Shabazz, whose given name is Garry Faulkner, has a lengthy criminal history. In 1996, when he ran for the Kingston Board of Education, the Freeman published a story that said the then 41-year-old had 21 criminal convictions dating to Nov. 15, 1975. The convictions run from violations like disorderly conduct and harassment to misdemeanors such as possession of stolen property.
