This has been making the rounds in FR circles.
Membership in The American Legion and the VFW are regulated to be at specific times as stated and voted on by their respective memberships. It is Restricted to times of a declared conflict.

To belong to a local American Legion or VFW post the applicant must produce a copy of his record of service known as a DD-214 and that copy is retained by that local post. It proves the dates of service and cites any combat awards and foreign theater campaign awards given to that individual.

While the American Legion requires the individual to be in service during those times , the VFW requires a member to have a foreign theater ribbon proving they served overseas with the exception of the Alaskan WWII campaigns.

If posts do not have these documents on file the respective state organizations known as Departments can and do shut them down. I belong to both and have served as an officer in both.
