This growth in subsidies "... gives every incentive and every opportunity for colleges to raise their fees."
Anyone looked at the college endowment funds lately? Harvard - $20 BILLION, Yale $20 BILLION, etc.
How/why are these schools even charging tuition at all? Answer - they're all run by greedy, elitist, ivory tower liberals.

I suggest that a certain fraction of the endowment be spent every year on higher education or the difference be taxed. We can argue the specific numbers, but it should end up something like 6-8%. I think of it as a kinder and gentler version of Henry the 8th’s dissolution of the monasteries. The rationale is similar. Higher ed and particularly high end higher ed, serves their own interests, and not our country’s best interests. We need NO departments of [GLTB, Women’s,Asian, ... name your aggrieved group] “studies” - none at all. Federal monies supporting said institutions are not in the common interest. And so on.
