Some US ships will be lost to the supersonic anti-ship missiles that Syria has. They are wicked and countermeasures are iffy if many are launched at a ship at the same time.
The Russians made a good system when they made the Yakhont.
They are powered by a kerosine burning ramjet and travel at about 1800mph. Range is 300km+ They are in Latakia and possibly aboard some ships.

Back in the late Fifties during the war game scenarios often acted out by our military and intelligence people, an incident like you describe in your first sentence always led to a nuclear exchange that unfolded either immediately or incrementally over a two week period.

This does not bode well.

A interesting thought isn't it ?
Think about it ?
For someone who hate's America and it's military there is no better way to destroy America's Navy then to put it in harms ways to bring it down below a 3rd rate power.
Most of Japan's Navy was destroyed in the battle of Leyte Gulf.
The Japanese lost 26 front-line warships during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
