Los Angeles, Calif., Aug 23, 2013 / 03:43 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Stressing the importance of personal witness to counter secular trends among Hispanics, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia today praised the work of the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders.
Hispanic culture still has a soul formed by an encounter with Jesus Christ, and the humanity and compassion that flow from it, Archbishop Chaput said Aug. 23 at the association's national conference.
These things are worth fighting for and sharing with others. Faith matters because it gives meaning to the word human in human beings. It matters because it makes us children of a loving God.
He was addressing the eighth annual conference of the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders, held in Los Angeles Aug. 23-25.
The association is dedicated to the spiritual formation of Latino leaders and to community service and cultural and educational projects. Its members include business, professional and community leaders.
Archbishop Chaput said he and Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles had helped launch CALL to to create a professional organization that would support Hispanic Catholic leaders.
We wanted to help those leaders renew the heart of an America that has become more and more confused, and more and more remote from its founding ideals. All of you here today are a testimony to what we hoped to accomplish. Im very, very grateful to be a part of your work.

(Vatican Radio) In the U.S. the Catholic Church is pulling out all the stops to urge Congress to pass a comprehensive reform of immigration policy. The campaign involves encouraging clergy and lay Catholics to exert pressure on Catholic lawmakers to support President Obamas plan for immigration reform and holding prayer marches through districts where the issue has become a divisive topic. It will continue until mid-October when the Republican-dominated House of Representatives is due to vote on the proposed legislation. Kevin Appleby is the Director of Migration Policy at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (the USCCB) and he told Vatican Radios Susy Hodges that this push for immigration reform is a now-or-never moment.

Appleby says the U:S. Church and the bishops are pressing hard on this "social justice" issue because as he puts it "it's our best chance in a generation" ... a now-or-never moment" to help millions of people.
He believes that they can make a difference in pushing the immigration reform issue forward especially because they can help persuade those lawmakers who have not yet make up their mind how they will vote. "There's a large number of Catholic lawmakers on the fence," he says, and by helping to pressure them "it could make the difference between winning and loosing."

Very good! Hispanic Catholics are still a little more faithful than some of the other traditionally Catholic groups, such as the Irish or the Italians.
Spain brought a lot of things to what is now the US (such as the first legal system, the first free black community, the first schools, etc.) in the Spanish settlement of Florida. The British tried to destroy it and in fact did manage to bring down most of it, burning and looting Florida, destroying the missions and their libraries, and killing or enslaving the Indians. So not a lot remained, but I hope any new generation of Hispanic Catholics will look at their history here and attempt to revive what was started.
Thank God America came from the British, and not the Spanish, like Mexico and their Catholic neighbors.
I’m amazed at some of the hatred of America I see expressed here.
This is the push the pro-abortion/pro-gay/anti-American democrats need to take over America completely and finish it’s destruction.
Not really, just stating historic facts.
Catholic Church is pulling out all the stops to urge Congress to pass a comprehensive reform of immigration policy. And assume they passed immigration reform. What is the Catholic Church next move when millions of others will continue coming here. Are we going to need immigration reform about every 5 years or so ? When the next family comes and the next and the next..What kind of pressure is the Catholic Church, putting on these 3rd world countries ? After any immigration reform others will come and say the last 11 million or so got amnesty ,why can’t we ?Where is our dream act ?Where are our waviers.. Where are our work permits, drivers licenses at ? How will the Catholic Church ,come terms with the next 11 million or so families that end up here ? Will the immigration system once again be declared broken ? Because the Catholic Church,is only wanting to put a band aid on the problem. Immigration reform solves nothing. Millions of others will have families they will say we cannot support our families so here we are.
