That is a big problem in NYS as those of us living 400 miles to the NE of NY City yet still in NY, get painted with the same brush.
It is true for downstate NY. Just a bunch of commies, or recent commie immigrants used to commie giveaways. Arrogant as the day is long. Think of a few million Anthony Weiners and you get the picture.
A few years ago, I was waiting for an elevator in the lobby of the Time Warner building when a few young women approached the now opening door and I stood aside to allow them to enter. One of the women, in her snide NY accent said, “guess you are not from NY”. Proud to NOT be from NY City!
Too bad all our politics is driven from that cesspool.
I was born and raised in NYC (and I HATE it, BTW, but that is irrelevant). I would never, never, NEVER have said that to you if you stood aside to let me enter an elevator first. No, what you probably would have gotten was a big smile and a hearty “Thank you!”
In addition, I have raised my sons to be gentlemen who hold doors for ladies, AND to stand when they are approached by a woman. If the women don’t like it, too bad.
Regards,
PS: It is possible (unlikely, but POSSIBLE), that the woman who said that to you was remarking on your unexpected politeness in comparison to NYC men and that her snide tone of voice was directed at THEM, not you: “I guess you’re not from NY (because a NY man would not stand aside).”
