The National Security Agency unlawfully gathered as many as tens of thousands of e-mails and other electronic communications between Americans as part of a now-discontinued collection program, according to a 2011 secret court opinion.

The 86-page opinion, which was declassified by U.S. intelligence officials Wednesday, explains why the chief judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court ruled the collection method unconstitutional. The judge, John D. Bates, found that the government had “advised the court that the volume and nature of the information it has been collecting is fundamentally different from what the court had been led to believe.”

...don’t you think it’s about time the people who had their information collected and stored are told about it?...since it’s been declassified.

Which is elegant judge-speak for “they lied to us”.

How about FOI requests? Everyone who may have been affected should file one.

How about banning secret courts on U.S. soil? What a travesty.

That's hilarious. Tens of thousands?

Probably millions of millions.

Most journalism majors are innumerate, which is why they go into journalism...or law.

In other words, the spooks have been lying through their teeth.

Prolly still are.

There has to be a river of blackmailable stuff flowing through the NSA, especially stuff on politicians. And extra special stuff on the Republicans.

What else would account for them all of a sudden going deaf, dumb and blind? Betcha nobama has stuff on all of them. Shades of the Clintons' FBI files.

ALL of these reports regarding “inadvertent gathering of American-based Internet traffic” are a diversion.

I really don’t care whether NSA erred in handling 3,000 or 56,000 or 5 million records. These are merely indications of how well the NSA complies with its own procedures.

The problem is NOT how well the NSA complies with procedures set up to administer programs that violate the 4th Amendment.

The problem IS that the NSA has programs are are inherently violations of the 4th Amendment.

Of course, the whole issue is moot because the entire Bill of Rights is de facto a dead letter.

A while back a read a sermon about how we now live in a post-Christian America. It didn’t take long to become a post-America America.
