Australia started as a prison island, didnt it? Not entirely, the British used it for more than that. And the Aborigines might resent the idea that their history started with the arrival of the British. Your point?

Australia started as a prison island, didnt it ? The British used North America as a "penal transportation" destination up until the events of the 1770s, so Australia isn't alone.
