White Ohio Suburb of Beavercreek Fights to Keep Black Bus Riders Out of Neighborhood (Barf Alert)

The primarily white community of Beavercreek, Ohio, is doing everything in its power to keep minority bus riders out, including risking tens of millions of dollars in federal funding.

The suburb of Beavercreek is about 15 minutes east of Dayton. The area boasts a major shopping mall, Wright State University and a medical clinic, according to ThinkProgress. In 2010, the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA) proposed adding three new bus stops in Beavercreek, which would bring in people from Dayton, give local business a boost, and offer new education and work opportunities to minorities.

But Beavercreek did everything in its power to keep the buses out. One tactic included mandating expensive guidelines that bus shelters must have heat, AC, and high-tech surveillance. The Beavercreek City Council rejected the RTA’s less costly, more straight-forward proposal.

“We turned downed an application because they didn’t meet our (design) criteria,” Beavercreek City Councilman Scott Hadley told to Eye On Ohio.

That's when the civil rights group Leaders for Equality in Action in Dayton (LEAD) filed a complaint under Title VI non-discrimination provisions of the Federal Highway Act. Now Beavercreek stands to lose tens of millions in federal highway funding.

LEAD’s complaint says that the peculiar demands of the Beavercreek City Council are discriminatory.

“The City of Beavercreek’s criteria and methods for deciding whether to allow RTA transit stops in Beavercreek, which resulted in denial of the application for those stops had the effect of subjecting African Americans, who disproportionately ride public transit, to discrimination,” the complaint said.

The civil rights division of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) ruled in favor of LEAD on June 13. FHWA stated that 11 of the requests made by Beavercreek were outside of standard design criteria and that the rejection of the RTA application had a disproportionate impact on blacks, making it discriminatory.

Beavercreek was ordered by the FHWA to restart the application process with the RTA.

The majority of civil rights complaints, according to FHWA spokesman Doug Hecox, are related to access for disabled citizens. In Dayton and Beavercreek, the issue is purely race.

“I can’t see anything else but it being a racial thing,” Sam Gresham, state chair of Common Cause Ohio, a public interest advocacy group, told ThinkProgress. “They don’t want African Americans going on a consistent basis to Beavercreek.”

“Their worldview and logic are two entirely separate things,” he said of the Beavercreek City Council.

The Council will meet on the matter again August 12 and has until September 11 to comply with the FHWA order.

So. The citizens of a suburb who don't need buses, and don't want buses adding to the traffic problems of their community are racists.

Got it. All white people are racists.

(sarc tag or puke tag. can't decide)

Dayton is a liberal city.

Dayton has a liberal newspaper.

The paper is doomed.

Dayton is doomed.

Once Obama completes the destruction of our military and Wright-Patterson AFB is closed, there will be no more Dayton.

I know of a large mall in this area that requested that bus routes from the hood be rerouted AWAY from the mall after ongoing problems with gangs of yutes.

The transit system complied. And everyone involved at all stages of that decision were DEMOCRATS!!!

"They don’t want African Americans going on a consistent basis to Beavercreek."

Can't blame them.

There are so many stories around the country, where gangs of “youth” go to malls, and cause trouble.

What exactly should happen? Sadly, if there are too many youth gang type people hanging around malls, they scare away legitimate shoppers. The stores in the malls lose business.

Anyone familiar with the Washington, DC area, may remember what happened to Landover Mall. It was a beautiful suburban mall, but too many gang types started going there, causing trouble, getting in fights, and creating a threatening atmosphere. Legitimate shoppers stayed away, and stores started pulling out of the mall. Eventually the mall was torn down.

Why exactly is there a civil right for youth gangs to go to a suburban mall and bring ghetto behaviors to a place which doesn’t want that????

Given all the trouble a similar situation created at one of our major malls in Western NY, after the Mall operators caved in to the race card, a loss of $10 Million is chump change.

They will be money ahead if they can keep the buses out.

Theoretically, the malls and stores should welcome the buses, because the buses will deliver more potential customers to them.

But that is only in theory. Liberals may agree with that theory. But the stores know that these new mall “customers” are not going to buy anything.

A decade ago I lived in Alabama. One of the malls was over run with 'youths' stirring up trouble by stealing, vandalism and intimidating customers. The cops upped manning and increased patrols in and around the mall.

Some 'community leaders' got their panties in a twist and started protesting. They intimidated the mall owners and tenants into requesting that the increased police presence be stopped.

Within a year, the mall (and most businesses within 5 blocks either direction) was all but a ghost town.

in the 90’s the bus drivers in Minneapolis went on strike. I guess lots of the businesses out of the cities absolutely loved it.

The shoplifting rate at the Mall of America plummeted during the strike.

None of that occurred in my area, as the decision to end bus service from the hood to the mall in question was made by DEMOCRATS

(though the mall is still failing for assorted other reasons)

If you were a shoplifter, would you REALLY want to have to depend on a union-operated bus to make your getaway??

I am a Beavercreek resident and have witnessed what the RTA has done to the Dayton Mall. I don’t want unsupervised, out of control teenagers being bused in to destroy our mall. I guess I’m a racist.

Great points. The gang types scared away real customers, and the stores couldn’t stay in business.

I’m sure the “community leaders” who protested against the increased security and police thought it was racist and profiling of people to have increased security.

Can't it just as easily be argued that the good citizens of Beavercreek were merely trying to give the bus riders adequate accommodations and that it is the RTA that is being racist in forcing them to be subjected to meager stations?
