Pressed about President Obama’s campaign promises that Osama bin Laden’s death signaled the end of al-Qaeda, in contrast with the threats from al-Qaeda against embassies across the globe this week, Jay Carney assured reporters that al-Qaeda’s “core” has been “decimated,” but admitted that the terrorist group and its affilliates still present a serious threat. “I think it’s indisputable that the elimination of Osama bin Laden was a major accomplishment in the effort against al-Qaeda,” Carney said at the White House press briefing this afternoon. “But nobody should be under any illusion that that threat still exists [sic].”

IMO Bin Laden was an old man no one was paying any attention to any longer. He had already been replaced by new people. So they allowed us to find him and kill him, and then they got to kill 20 or more of our seals to bind the bargain.

Look, its like this. Of course they spread it around that Al Qaeda was defeated, and of course everyone knew that was baloney. But they also knew that it was useful to say so, and therefore true enough for the purpose.
Which means that, while saying “we always said Al Qaeda was still a threat” is also baloney, it is also useful to say so and therefore true enough for the purpose.
Its silly to get all wound up over strict factuality when there are more important things at stake. So just understand this: if Obama says it, its because it needed to be said, and that makes it as true as it needs to be.
