The population of the United States at the time, based upon census records was 31,443,321. So 1.6% of that is 503,093 people owning slaves.

Today that would be less than 2 tenths of one percent of the population. In other words 99.8 + percent of the population of the US have had nothing to do with slavery.

Does anyone have a good reference link to 1.6% of the pop. owned slaves in 1860? I’m not finding one - except for a ‘yahoo-answers’ link discussion.

Many who did own slaves only had one or two and they were more like apprentices in small businesses, many of them used their skills to have their own business after being freed. The slave owning master of a large plantation with a village of slaves was an incredibly small number.
