Most current smokers in the U.S. would like to give up smoking. Perhaps as a testimony to their desire to quit, 85% of smokers say they have in fact tried to quit at least once in their lifetime, including 45% who have tried at least three times.

Smokers on average are engaging in a habit they wish they didn't have, and, in fact, the average smoker has attempted to quit at least three times in their lifetime. The difficulty in quitting is attested to by the fact that more than seven in 10 smokers say they are addicted to cigarettes.

The majority of former smokers say their concern for their health was the main factor that caused them to quit smoking. This is an important finding, but given that 91% of smokers already admit that smoking is harmful to smokers' health and 79% admit that smoking is a cause of lung cancer, it is clear that the specter of bad health, disease, and death has not been enough in and of itself to get smokers to stop.

I don’t want to quit and when I do I will.
I agree with you 100%!
Fortunately I didn’t replace my addiction to nicotine with an addiction to fascism like so many former smokers do.
Y’all are welcome to smoke in my house and if I owned a bar I would flout that law.
I quit almost thirty years ago. I gradually cut down from two packs a day to five cigarettes a day, and then quit on the national smoke out day. Haven’t wanted one since. For years cigarette smoke didn’t bother me, but of late I don’t like to be around it. I still enjoy a good cigar from time to time.
When I decided I really wanted to quit, I quit. No drugs, no gum, no classes, I just quit.
Ditto.
If you want to quit smoking, pick a date, do it, and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Done.
I have never tried to give up smoking. In fact, it’s been probably two weeks since my last puff.
You have to want to be addicted which requires you telling yourself stories over and over again as to why you need them.
Once that pattern is set the only way to break it is telling yourself new stories.
Hmmmm.... I think I’ll go to the local watering hole this evening, enjoy some drinks and have a few cigs...
Just so happens I found a pack that I purchased a month ago.
I smoke cigars. One a day. I love them and won’t quit until forced. And that’s likely to be soon.
Hopefully you’ll want to quit before you’re sitting in a waiting room, as I was, praying that your chest X-rays are ‘false positives’.
If it comes to that, here’s how I did it: Cigars>Pall Mall Red>Winstons>Golden Blend (Red Man)>Camel Snus>nicotine gum> to where I am now: Dubble Bubble & Wrigley chewing gum.
It’s not easy but when you’re ready, it can be done.
Good luck FRiend.
That’s how I quit drinking. I just made the decision and haven’t drank since. And that’s from being a 12 pack on a slow day drinker.
Dang, if I drank that much beer, I'd spend at least half the day in the bathroom.
I swear by e-cigs. I can carry them in my pocket, they are tasty, and I still get a little bang of nicotine. They keep my temper sweet.
Same here. 3 packs-a-day to nada-a-day. 30 years ago. Clean ever since.
Gallup says 70% of smokers feel they are addicted...Are you suggesting they want to be addicted??
Same here.... just stopped one day (around 8 years ago). I do drink fake beer though, which satisfies me just as much as real beer did. I always hated soda, and drinking water all evening is too boring.
Quit smoking 2.5 years ago. Tried everything to quit but just no willpower. Was in the hospital for 7 days, never smoked after that. But I still crave cigarettes especially with my coffee.
I do know one thing. If I start smoking again, I’d never quit.
Congrats to you! I’m still a smoker and I don’t like being around it! I’ve had several
surgeries the last few months & of course
all the docs lectures on smoking causing longer recovery times, etc. I slowed down a bit & hope to quit soon. Luck to me!
Rookie!
Just kidding cripple, good for you.
