The U.S. unemployment rate dropped 0.2 percentage point to 7.4% in July and a broader measure of unemployment fell to 14% from 14.3%, but there was good news and bad news behind the declines.
The drop in the main unemployment rate was driven by both positive and negative factors. Most of the drop was due to more people finding work. Some 227,000 more people said they were employed in July compared with June. But at the same time the overall labor force dropped by 37,000, a possible sign of discouraged long-term jobless dropping out.

While the number of people who were employed increased, another positive sign was a big drop — 263,000 — in the number of people who say they’re unemployed. Many of the unemployed found jobs this month, but at least some gave up and stopped looking for jobs.
Another mixed sign came from the decline in the broader unemployment rate, known as the “U-6″ for its data classification by the Labor Department. That includes everyone in the official rate plus “marginally attached workers” — those who are neither working nor looking for work, but say they want a job and have looked for work recently; and people who are employed part-time for economic reasons, meaning they want full-time work but took a part-time schedule instead because that’s all they could find.
The drop in the U-6 rate last month was driven by the same positives in the main rate, fewer unemployed. However, the drop only partially offset a huge jump in June.
Meanwhile, the number of part-time workers who would like full-time jobs continued to increase, even after a big surge in June.
