Dear Jim,
I just sent a small donation. We, like most all non-government citizens, are also being hit hard by the antics of what Allen Keyes recently called the “insane children” infesting government under obozo.
That said, while your resistance to accepting advertising on Free Republic is commendable and fully understandable, might I suggest that, because this economy will continue to suck until obozo is gone, it may be time to reconsider. Disposable incomes are shrinking from lack of jobs and Helicopter Ben’s 1 TRILLION a year inflationary dumping of FRAUDS into the system is squeezing us all.
We all understand the downside of allowing advertising here so I won’t belabor the obvious.
The upside?
1. Those who place ads will clearly be the hardest of the hardcore businesses out there. They will get exposure on the 7th most visited site on the web. And, here’s the one I like best: They and their respect for conservative ideals will become KNOWN TO MILLIONS OF THE REST OF US. A case in point is the recent cave by Dick’s Sporting Goods in the recent 2nd Amendment skirmish. They took their firearms off the shelves and have pushed their connection with even hunting rifles to the background.
Bass Pro Shops, on the other hand, has held the line and just put out a large firearms only circular declaring their support for the RTKABA. I live within walking distance of a Dick’s. I will never darken their door again but will DRIVE 20 miles to the Bass Pro Shop when I need items they both offer!
Thanks to those “insane children”, we are currently choosing sides in this country. I suspect that FReepers will — as we do here — go out of their way to patronize these businesses as opposed to supporting those on the other side of the issues we hold dear. I’m personally doing all I can to cut off my support for the other side once I identify them and I know there are millions of others doing the same.
2. If these folks step up — as I suspect they will — they will do so knowing right up front that you will NOT permit interference with the FIRST AMENDMENT at a site run as well as FR. If you and your colleagues running FR continue to do so as carefully and frugally as you historically have in the past, the loss of the occasional advertiser and their revenue should be but a speed bump as opposed to the financial and operational catastrophe that has taken down less cautiously run sites.
I’d be interested to know how others feel about this and hope they’ll weigh in. I hope they light up this thread!
