My theory is Weiner ticked off the Clintoons well before this and being how they operate they dug up this dirt on him. If you recall, at this point in ‘01 it was clear that Mark Greene FINALLY was going to win an election and become Mayor of New York by tying up the D nomination. That conventional wisdom lasted until NYC’s tragic primary day.
