The long-awaited requirements for the Boy Scouts of Americas Sustainability merit badge have been released.
The badge joins the Eagle-required list as an option to Environmental Science merit badge. Scouts must earn either Sustainability or Environmental Science on their journey to Eagle.
Scouts may begin working on Sustainability MB once pamphlets arrive in Scout Shops and at scoutstuff.org in early August, but you can get a first look at the requirements below. Or click here (PDF) for a downloadable flier you can share with your Scouts. Sustainability MB requirements
1. Before starting work on any other requirements for this merit badge, write in your own words the meaning of sustainability. Explain how you think conservation and stewardship of our natural resources relate to sustainability. Have a family meeting, and ask family members to write down what they think sustainability means. Be sure to take notes. You will need this information again for requirement 5.
2. Do the following:
Water. Do A AND either B OR C.
A. Develop and implement a plan that attempts to reduce your familys water usage. Examine your familys water bills reflecting usage for three months (past or current). As a family, choose three ways to help reduce consumption. Implement those ideas for one month. Share what you learn with your counselor, and tell how your plan affected your familys water usage.

I know this is a blog but thought it better than some articles and you can see from the comments that this organization is far gone.
This ain’t satire. This is what the scouts 2013 jamboree was celebrating - besides buggery.
This will morph into a obamayouth socialist international organization sponsored by public/private partnerships.
Go Green!
Go Gay!
Go Boy Scouts!
Very, very gay.
In keeping with the foulest traditions of the Gay Scouts of America.
Glad my son made Eagle this year so he doesn’t have to put up with this crap!
Cooking 2014: Discuss with your Councilor how to make a reservation. Explain the difference between Phantom Gourmet professional reviews of restaurants and the pedestrian “Zing/Praise” method used by the Pat Whitley Show. Explain the ***** Rating system. Explain how to choose a restaurant by altruistic markers such as Rainbow Flags.
So, it’s a conservative principle to waste resources? What actually is wrong with this?
OMG
Just askin'.
Who wants their sons or grandsons camping out with homosexuals?
Wow. It was worse than I would have imagined. I just registered today to attend the On My Honor Coalition national convention in September. This is the group that is forming a Christ centered alternative to BSA since BSA committed institutional suicide last June.
I’m more and more disgusted with the direction BSA has taken. It’s not True North, that for sure.
2B. Make a list of stuff your family doesn’t “need.” and give it away. Redistribution anyone.
I’ve got lots of things I don’t “need.” For instance, I don’t “need” to give thousands of hours and countless money to being a Scoutmaster. Maybe in the interest of Sustainability, I should quit.

ROFL. A merit badge for people who are willing to allow others to think for them, for people in political correctness. (but I repeat myself)
The left loves to scold the rest of us over “sustainability”, yet none of their schemes ever are. Just like the topic of “Peak Oil”, the worry over water usage is one of economics and not supply.
Curiously, if a Scout were to really dive into the topic of “sustainability”, they would almost be run over by the climate change meme, and at the top of that meme is the idea that warmer climate means the oceans will rise. But ever-rising oceans are full of water, and the left wants us to worry about too much water AT THE VERY SAME TIME they demand we worry about a shortage of water.
Since I can ship a bottle of water from Iceland or Fiji to almost anyone in the civilized world overnight by FedEx, by definition there cannot be a “shortage” of water, only a shortage of money. And that fact is the key to knowing why this merit badge is such a foolish symbol of the moronic left.
Since the scouts are a PC, pro-homo group, I’m not sure why articles from their blogs are tolerated on FR. Jim wouldn’t allow NAMBLA to post their monthly newsletter, would he?
What is wrong with this is they already had a perfectly good merit badge covering this - Environmental Science.
It had hard science behind it. Sustainability is, frankly, BS.
It’s like, for the very first time, engineers everywhere finally discovered that keeping costs down and conserving resources were somehow linked. That reusing waste streams such as heat, steam, and contaminated effluents is brand new science. (No boiler EVER uses waste steam, for example, to preheat boiler feed water tanks - nope that’s news)
It’s like the ‘hate crime’ statutes. Because aggravated murder didn’t exist before hate crimes.
It’s a conservative principal to stick with hard sciences, to stick with theories that are proven fact by use of repeatable, well-designed experiments.
This is essentially the ‘climate science’ merit badge. I’ll be shocked if they don’t make you pick a date at which NYC becomes submerged in order to get it.
(MAJOR SARCASM ALERT!) Now that the BSA have adopted THIS vital program, the sustainability thing is a natural what with all those scouts bending over picking up trash and planting trees!
America has LOST ITS BLEEPING MIND!!!!
