Civil rights activists upbeat after Obama meeting on voting

President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder met with top civil rights leaders Monday at the White House to hash out a path forward on voting rights after the Supreme Court struck down a central provision of the Voting Rights Act.

Activists emerging from the meeting said they were encouraged by the comments made by the president and administration officials in the "candid" meeting.

"We were assured by the president and the attorney general they will aggressively fight to protect the right of all Americans to vote," said Rev. Al Sharpton. He said there was a "wound in the Voting Rights Act — but it is far from dead."

The Supreme Court last month struck down a provision of the law which required certain jurisdictions with a history of voting suppression to clear any changes in their voting laws with the Justice Department. The court said Congress could update the pre-clearance formula, but it remains unclear whether lawmakers will be able to strike a deal.

Last week, Holder said he would turn to other provisions of the act to ask a federal court to re-impose pre-clearance. His legal challenge could prevent the implementation of a voter-ID law hastily passed by the Texas legislature in the aftermath of the court ruling.

The civil rights leaders at the White House on Monday said they were encouraged by the administration's aggressive response to the ruling. The American Civil Liberties Union's Laura Murphy said White House officials had committed "to use all available resources to protect the crown jewel of the civil rights movement."

They also said that while striking a deal in Congress could prove difficult, they would look to counter efforts to making voting more difficult with registration and mobilization drives.

Lawmakers and activists from Florida, Texas, and Georgia in attendance said they would also focus their efforts on the state and local level, hoping to prevent new changes to existing voting laws.

“Keep a close eye on action at the state-legislative level,” said Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League. “These state legislatures, in the last 24-36 months, there have been a long list of bills introduced in states across the nation — particularly in the South but not exclusively in the South — that fall into the category of voter suppression.”

They also vowed to pay particular attention to the concerns of Hispanic voters. National Council of La Raza President Janet Murguía was in attendance at the meeting, as was new Labor Secretary Thomas Perez.

Florida state Rep. Alan William said the activists saw the push within the context of a greater civil rights struggle.

“One thing that’s not lost upon many of us down there, post the Shelby decision but also post the Zimmerman verdict, we know that next year would have been the first year that Trayvon Martin would have had an opportunity to vote,” Williams said, referring to the black teenager whose shooting death last year in Sanford, Fla. prompted a national debate on race.

“And we know that it’s very sacred, and it’s not lost on us. We want to make sure that everyone has that opportunity.”

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday that "we should be able to build bipartisan consensus about the need to protect those important rights."

"The President is certainly interested in working with Democrats and Republicans to protect those rights," Earnest said. "And that’s something that Republicans have supported in the past, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t support those kinds of measures in the future."

Just pass a Law that says if you pay no Income Taxes, you don’t Vote, period. Why enable those who just vote to get others’ earnings handed to them?

Man, I wish they’d get it right. Neither Al Sharpton nor Jesse Jackson are “Reverends”. Neither has earned a divinity degree, had a congregation, or church. Sharpton was “ordained” at age 10 by a DC preacher and has maintained the lie ever since. Both should be ashamed. But then, that would imply some integrity.

Barry and Holder told them that voter fraud WILL continue and the freeloaders will continue to get their handouts and freebies.

This, coming from the Marxist Muslim gay illegal alien who canceled public tours of the White House. What was that about “access to voting”?

WTF is a “Civil Rights Leader”? Oh, that’s right. A more descriptive term would be POVERTY PIMP.

Will 0bama still have the jack boot of the IRS on the throats of the Tea Party in future elections, too? YES. Will tax-exempt status apps still be delayed? YES. Will we see a rerun of what we saw in 2012 with the rollout of Sandra Fluke and the 'War on Women', Holders' lawsuits against Voter ID States, and other voter suppression of the Republican vote in midterms and 2016? Yes.

We're doomed. REALLY.

Who isn’t getting to vote?

These people are so juvenile. “Oh he’s going to help us get to vote.” “Well weren’t you able to vote last time?” “Oh yeah, but he’d going to help to make sure I can next time.” Have you ever been denied the right to vote.” “Well no..., but you never know.”

Oui...

You know, if it wasn't for all that voter suppression of blacks by the Republicans and the evil GOP-controlled news media, perhaps 0bama might have won in 2012. /s

This is nothing but the criminal president and his criminal brothas scraping up as many votes as possible to combat the masses who are EXTREMELY PISSED OFF at the Dems numerous criminal offenses during the last 5 years.

I do think, however, that there's a whole bunch of 20-something white bimbo females who'll fall hook line and sinker for the 'War on Women' BS that will magically appear again after its usefulness in the 2012 election had lapsed. How do wars just pop up then go away again then pop up again, anyway? The females will have forgotten all about Weiner, Filner and Spitzer.. Duhhhhhhhhhhhh

If they weren’t liars and hypocrites, they’d be REJOICING that the racism of 1973 or whenever the baseline was done is no longer there. But, since they ARE liars and hypocrites, and statists to boot, they’re incapable of conceiving that some government power, even if it had been temporarily called for, is obsolete and has now become just another tool of “just us”.

I believe this is what they meant, me being racist, that is.

If they spent all the money they use to fight voter id laws to instead help people get valid ids, they could provide free IDs to every valid voter in the states with laws.

Of course, that is not their purpose — it is to make sure people who are not allowed to vote can continue to do so.
