I lived in LA.
NOTHING MOVES in Los Angeles after approx 2:30AM. All bars are legally required to shut down at 2AM sharp, and they do.
The only things moving are the Hospital (sort of) and LAX (for early flights).
Look at a map -- Hastings was rushing due South, toward LAX at 4:30AM.
Sounds like he was indeed "going off the radar" by catching an outbound 6AM or 7AM flight, perhaps to Europe where he'd just contacted Wikileaks that day.
And just the other day some engineers showed how they could hack into a vehicle’s onboard computer and cause it to accelerate, apply brakes, even honk the horn. CIA/NSA hit?

If he knew his way around I seriously doubt he would be taking Highland south from Hollywood on his way to the Airport -- especially if he was in a hurry. He would have gotten on the 101 and taken it to the 110 which would drop him right at LAX -- moreover he could hit 80 or 90 on the freeway that time of night.

Traffic in LA these days is 24/7. It usually moves faster at 2:30 am than 2:30 pm - unless of course CALTRANS is out there on golden time closing lanes and “fixing” the road.
Lots of people use Highland to travel south - even if headed for LAX. When there isn’t too much traffic, it’s convenient.
This event is quite mysterious. I hope the truth comes out.
Anybody thought to check to see if he was booked? Highly unlikely that he managed to book a flight under an alias.

We all think he’s dead. Family has someone’s cremains.
If a car can be driven by unseen forces, who’s to say he didn’t jump out of the car and let those forces drive the car into a tree? Meanwhile he escapes undetected. He’s off the radar. We’re focusing on an horrific explosion which did the job of distracting us.

Europe is unlikely, at least direct. Those flights tend to leave late afternoon or early evening, which gets you to Europe in the morning. A lot of flights to eastern US destinations go early, though, which with time zones and flight times gets you in sometime in the afternoon. He may have been making a connection. we need to know if there was a reservation in his name.
