Even if a car has an automatic transmission, isn’t using the shift lever mechanical? If it is, you could shove the thing into “PARK” and stop it that way.

As a guy who has designed the park mechanism in an automatic transmission, I can tell you they are designed to NOT engage above a certain (low) speed. Otherwise it would rip the housing apart due to the forces involved.

If you are at speed, PARK is not much better than NEUTRAL, as the locking pin will likely just snap.
The Prius however, does not have a mechanically linked transmission.
