Trayvon Martin’s Parents Rich After HOA Settlement, Merchandise Deals?
The Inqisitr ^ | July 18, 2013 | Patrick Frye

Posted on 07/23/2013 4:30:19 PM PDT by kevcol

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Trayvon Martin’s parent’s settlement with the Retreat at Twin Lakes Home Owner’s Association is believed to be higher than $1 million.
.
.
.
In the same time frame the lawsuit was filed, Sybrina Fulton also filed two petitions to patent and trademark Trayvon Martin merchandise including the phrases “I Am Trayvon” and “‘Justice For Trayvon.” Such Trayvon Martin merchandise is turning out to be quite lucrative for many seeking to profit from the George Zimmerman trial by pandering to both sides of the issue.

While Sybrina Fulton already had a $68,768 salary with the Miami-Dade County government, Trayvon Martin’s mother received a eight month paid vacation worth $40,825. Such Trayvon Martin donations only soared higher as time went on.

I hope there is some way for the HOA to recover all or part of the settlement. As for the merchandise...the low turnout at last weekend's rallies (less than 10K nationwide) probably leave them with a lot of pre-padi inventory, lol.

Money will never bring back their son. There’s something sickening about this. If they had given the money to charity, it would have made a good point.

Zimmerman's Lawyers surely should file "Unlawful Enrichment" claims on the funds, since he was Acquitted, and they EXTORTED money knowing that the Gangsta son attacked Zimmerman, and messed with the wrong guy.....

I thought the Law is that you cannot gain financial reward from a Crime, nor can you make claims PRIOR TO TRIAL, that extort financial gain?

The HOA didn't lose any money on this. The insurance company paid the settlement.

Interestingly, this probably bodes well for Zimmerman in the long run, too. By paying the settlement the insurance company may have acknowledged that Zimmerman was acting as a volunteer "agent" of the HOA when he shot Martin. Under the bylaws of every HOA I've ever dealt with, any volunteers who work for the HOA as board members or in another capacity are indemnified against any lawsuits that are brought against them. Once Zimmerman was acquitted of the criminal charges, he may very well have the right to compel the HOA to pay any legal bills and financial settlements from civil lawsuits related to the incident.

I know I shouldn’t prejudge, but it doesn’t surprise me that she had a pretty good government job before this happened.

They have probably filed as a 501 and Obama’s IRS would certainly approve.

This thing becomes a bigger joke every day with TV appearances by the distraught mother, and Al shrieking at the top of his lungs.

It will be interesting to see how long the settlement lasts them.

As far as the HOA: they all have insurance and I’m certain that it was the insurance carrier that paid out, not the homeowners. But the homeowners are going to be in for a giant assessment soon because the insurance company will jack up the HOA’s rates greatly after this.

Just guessing based on what happened to an HOA I know of after a big insurance payout.

Yes. Doesn't the "Son of Sam" laws apply here?

Not just that HOA. All HOAs and all homeowners will see their rates go up based on the expectation that more parents will trade a thug son for a big insurance check. It's a sad lesson to teach other parents: If you fail in raising your child, you can still get rich.

Zimmerman should sue to get a piece of or all the HOA money and the tee shirt sales.

They lost their son. But they feel they got something better - a lot of money.

Throw in a few cases of malt liquor for the father and they would be ecstatically happy.
