The GOP is stepping into deep doo-doo to even
suggest such a thing for two reasons:
- It will save very little and does nothing to address the root cause of the post office financial crisis: bloated payrolls, pensions and benefits.
- I can hear the cries of "war on the elderly" and "war on the cities" by making them walk to cluster mailboxes in crime-ridden central cities.
FWIW, a lot of rural people already walk a quarter-mile or more to get their mail from the nearest roadside box. I know, because I was one. The exercise didn't hurt us at all, even when it was 40 below zero. You adapt.
Just saying that, politically, this is a loser.

When I was a kid, we walked a mile to the box but now it is at the houses.

I have to agree. This will create quite an inconvience for many of those 80-100.

I joked a while ago that they should switch to using owls for delivery. B-) Seriously, you're right, this is a political loser. If I was running the USPS, to save money I woulds get rid of Saturday delivery. If I had to go further, perhaps having deliveries and home pickups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays perhaps.
