A lot of the door-to-door walking routes are in areas of poverty, crime, and concentrations of elderly people. Are they seriously going to make those people walk to centralized mailboxes to receive their mail? I just dont see it being approved when it gets right down to making the change. Very good points.
I guess I'm not convinced by the people in this thread who say "Gee, I live in the beautiful, scenic mountains and just love to walk a mile in the crisp, fresh air to get my mail" (at least during good weather). Very few live in those circumstances.

In this case, you may have to give up on mail delivery to your home. I would rather the Post Office went out of business entirely. I'd be perfectly happy to have FedEx or UPS pick up my mail and deliver it, along with my groceries, Amazon purchases, etc.
Meanwhile, you are forgetting how many official documents have short response times. With as many hassles rural America is getting from government, this is just another nail in the Agenda 21 coffin.
No need to get snarky on me...
I was not being snarky. When I referred to an urban extermination center with no escape, I meant it. That's what it is. One could cut off the entire San Francisco Bay Area with less than a battalion, and then cut the power. Millions would die. The land thereabout has no water all summer. Most cities in America now have such "greenbelts," and if you think a pretty place to walk is all they are about, I've got bad news for you. I've written two books dealing with the topic extensively. Those are only a few of the consequences of blowing off the people of the land and pretending that "nature takes care of itself." It's even Biblical.
Lev. 26:25 And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall execute the vengeance of the covenant; and ye shall be gathered together within your cities; and I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. For real. Where will you run? How will you get there? Whom will you seek? Will they be ready to help you? Do you have those relationships and contracts in place? Empty rural America and America is signing its own death warrant.

I can’t answer that. I just know that the market works when people are allowed the freedom to create and innovate. Somehow we manage with Fedex and UPS, so I think the problems you mention could be solved.
All I know is that government can’t manage a 2-car funeral, and that the USPS cannot survive without being forced to compete for business in a true open market.

I always thought the USPS would be more efficient if it switched over to owls. B-) (ala Harry Potter) B-)

Just saying that, politically, this is a loser.
I joked a while ago that they should switch to using owls for delivery. B-) Seriously, you're right, this is a political loser. If I was running the USPS, to save money I woulds get rid of Saturday delivery. If I had to go further, perhaps having deliveries and home pickups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays perhaps.

The issue is unsustainable benefits
Actually they are better prepared then most organization. Congress in the days when they were brilliant made them set aside a certain amount each year to ensure that they had enough money to pay their employees who dedicated their lives to the Post Office a decent and deserved pension. Too bad other organizations and private businesses didn’t do that. I understand why private businesses didn’t because they pay outlandish salaries to all their employees, but governments should be putting money into funds that will be used to pay the pensions later when people retire.

This week, I had my first experience with USPO for the year. A clerk called, “Next in line.” When I approached her window, she picked up some envelops in front of her and disappeared into the back room. When “Next in line.” was called at another window, I switched to it. As I was concluding the transaction, the first clerk returned and seemed miffed that I had switched windows and was about to get on with my life.
I began to ask myself how this business could possible make a profit. Then I remembered, it is not a business, and it operates at a loss... No wonder.
