Dick Durbin to hold hearing on ‘stand your ground’ laws

The Senate’s No. 2 Democrat will hold a hearing on “stand your ground” laws this Fall.

Dick Durbin of Illinois announced on Friday that his Senate Judiciary subcommittee will hear testimony on state laws that give citizens the right of lethal force to defend themselves in situations where they feel their life is threatened, measures which are on the books in some form in dozens of states.

Durbin’s hearing will probe the roles of the NRA and the American Legislative Exchange Council — which helps draft conservative legislation in statehouses — in the crafting of the “stand your ground” laws, his office said. Durbin also plans to examine the legal definition of self defense, how the laws have affected shooting confrontations and how the laws interact with racial profiling by law enforcement.

A witness list or further details will be released in August in advance of the September hearing, an aide said.

The announcements comes six days after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the killing of Trayvon Martin, a case that sparked national scrutiny of “stand your ground” laws.

Well, Durbin is liberal, and the liberal view is that stand your ground laws are a reason for this case happening. We live in a liberal world.

Under the Pro Trayvon folks’ version of this case, it was indeed TM who would have benefited from SYG. But why think anything through intelligently?

Their problem was the facts, not the law.

How many FReepers swore up and down that, just because Zimmerman’s defense team DIDN’T use SYG in their arguments, that SYG was safe from the Leftists?

How does that big, 44-oz big-gulp sized serving of “WE TOLD YOU SO” taste today?

I can see it now, the Beat-down/Knockout Game Protection Act of 2013. Will be one of Congresses finest moments, if you're a lib. That is until the “little angels” start beating them.

So Obama changes the rules of engagement in the military by fiat, because he can, thus seriously hobbling our once invincible military machine, because he thinks they too have been “too aggressive” in the past. Their penalty for past success is to become obedient sitting ducks for enemies who don’t play by the rules.

But disarming the citizenry is more delicate work, and the frontal attack didn’t work so well. So again the point of attack is the civilian rules of engagement, made a softer target by getting his demographic charged up with racial animus. Not long from now, defending the centuries old law of self defense will bring a charge of racism. Alinsky Stigmatism 101. Thats why the NRA is being singled out as the focus of the new evil. Sad times.

Dick Turban is a draft dodger? Pray tell this Vietnam vet more; I loved hearing Tom Harkin boast about his nonexistent combat record.

Anyway, anyone who seeks reelection and advocates repeal of Stand Your Ground will go down in flames. These elitists really don’t know what they sound like to us ordinary folks.
