Why didn’t the southerners pick their own damn cotton? I believer the reason the north was so much more advanced than the South was BECAUSE the north had to innovate and industrialize BECAUSE they didn't have dirt cheap labor...
Cheap labor - and the perverse incentives it created - cause the South to lose the war. Slavery was wrong - and Karma's a bitch... They should have picked their own cotton or established industry.

Slaves, even white slaves, were common for centuries throughout Europe. At the time of the founding of the US, Freedom was still a new and misunderstood concept to some of the elite and "newcomers".
