Five D.C. Council members will decide whether Marion Barry should be dealt sanctions in addition to a fine he was issued as punishment for accepting gifts from city contractors.
Council Chairman Phil Mendelson on Friday appointed an ad hoc committee that will investigate Mr. Barry’s actions.
The committee is comprised of council members Yvette M. Alexander, Ward 7 Democrat; Anita Bonds, at-large Democrat; Mary M. Cheh, Ward 3 Democrat; David Grosso, at-large independent, and its chairman is Kenyan McDuffie, Ward 5 Democrat.
The District’s Board of Ethics and Government Accountability on Thursday censured Mr. Barry and imposed a $13,600 penalty on the Ward 8 Democrat for accepting gifts from prohibited sources. Mr. Barry, 77, acknowledged in financial disclosure forms this year receiving $2,800 from Forney Enterprises, Inc. and $4,000 from the owner of F&L Construction. Council members, who are tasked with approving contracts worth more than $1 million, are prohibited from accepting gifts worth more than $20 from firms with business before the city.

I wonder when the vast army of black Americans that love liberty will rise together and rid themselves of people who plight such a terrible image upon the rest. Kind of like the religion of peace, they never stand up and protest the violence. If I was of a darker color, I would be one loud voice crying in my neck of the world for people of my skin color cleaned up their rap songs, BET TV which is mostly just sexual inuendos, and nothing every that is serious, intellectual, informative or educational. I love this name, “Board of Ethics and Government Accountability” ... where were they when these lame-brains decided to stick it to Walmart (’Living Wage’) and thus doomed multiple store openings in the District. Maybe they should change the last part of the name from Government Accountability to Union Payoff Accountability!

Why don’t they just make him the mayor again? That way they can keep a closer eye on the “take” make sure they got their share and everybody is happy. He is great at generating graft and that is the only real purpose of the DC City Counsel.
Barry’s problem is failure to redistribute. Had he redistributed half or a quarter of his take to the council, there would be no problem
The council is making an example. Share or pay the penalty.
