The thing about conservatism is that so many of its virtues are negative virtues — i.e. leave us alone to raise strong families, leave us alone to build thriving businesses, leave us alone to be compassionate in ways that don’t advertise themselves. It’s like the silent growth of a dense forest that no one notices, and yet it happens. The problem is that it’s not well suited for flashy public policy campaigns.
