As the Department of Labor (DOL) celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Fair Labor Standards Act this year, the department is sponsoring a Smartphone app contest to help consumers identify businesses who treat "their workers fairly and lawfully." The DOL requests [emphasis added] that contestants:
develop a smartphone application that will transform the way the public is able to use departmental enforcement data. By providing consumers with information at their fingertips about which businesses have treated their workers fairly and lawfully, the creator of this application will help empower consumers to make informed choices about where to bring their business.
According to the Labor Department, the finished product should integrate:
the department's publicly available enforcement data with consumer ratings websites, geo-positioning Web tools, and other relevant data sets, such as those available from state health boards.
Presumably the data incorporated into the app would consist only of past infractions for which the targeted businesses have already been cited and penalized. The DOL seems to suggest the app could be used as something of a blacklist for job-seekers and other businesses:
The app could also prove a useful tool for job seekers and

Walmart is probably not eligible. Everybody knows that they exploit their employees, even if the employees don’t know it, and Walmart’s employees need to unionize.

“Yeah.... I’d like you to lower the price on my dinner at your fine restaurant... looks like your workers are kinda unhappy...”
My goodness! That was my first thought also. This sounds very threatening. “Nice business ya got here. Shame if somebody should report youse for not being fair to youse employees. Got da picture?”

Every day another abuse of power. Every hour another outrage! This administration is pushing every button just hoping to provoke a crisis so they can bring the hammer down.
I have never been more frightened for my country and fellow citizens in my entire life.. Especially watching the railroad of Zimmerman right now. They are going to convict him of manslaughter just to appease the race baiters in this country. Our own justice department riling it all up. It is surreal!
How many months ‘til union teachers instruct kids how to ‘turn in their parents’ for thought crimes against THE STATE?
I agree with your every word.
I’m getting awfully tired, to the point where I want to sleep all the time...
The guv should have nothing to do with online ratings of businesses. Half the time they are filed pro by the business itself, half the time negative by their competitors, but either way there should not be an official government app replicating that info out to the public in any sort of official format.
And that’s not even getting to what they’re trying to do with the enforcement data!
Indeed.
How about an app that indicates when workers put in a full days effort for a full days pay? How about when workers have a work ethic that should be commended? How come we never hear about anything like that?
Dear Labor Dept:
Dirty little secret about those of us employed in the private sector: We ALL pretty much HATE our jobs but we do them in order to feed our families, pay our mortgage, and MOST importantly PAY TAXES to finance a—holes in the the federal government who create stupid programs like this!
While you f—kin’ Labor Dept. pr!cks work eight hour days with tons of federal holidays along with generous benefits, most of us in the private sector work-YES, ACTUALLY WORK, 10—12-14 hour days to keep the businesses we work for profitable , competitive and afloat, so they too can pay even more taxes in order to keep you in a cushy government job along with supporting a class that will vote for political party that promises to tax us even more....you know, just to spread the wealth around.
Signed: PO’d taxpayer!
