NBA star Ray Allen visited Capitol Hill on Wednesday to testify at a Senate hearing about diabetes, one of the issues closest to him as his son, Walker, is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
The Miami Heat player has been a staunch advocate for diabetes awareness ever since his son became gravely ill and was diagnosed in 2008 during the NBA Finals, when Allen played for the Boston Celtics. Walker Allen is now 6 years old and a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Childrens Congress Delegate, and his father continues to show support...
Ranking member Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) in her remarks expressed her wishes for continued bipartisan support for the cause, to further research and encourage more helpful breakthroughs.
It doesnt matter whether youre a Democrat, a Republican, an independent or a Green Party member what matters is that we all work together to focus on the estimated 3 million Americans with Type 1 diabetes, she said. Since I founded the Senate Diabetes Caucus, weve been successful in working together in a bipartisan manner to triple the funding for diabetes research.

But WHY is this a problem to be solved by taxpayers? Wouldn't there be better and more targeted funding if government bureaucracies were NOT handing out the money?
Collins boasts about tripling funding for research...to me, I wonder how much of that was wasted or not invested in other, more specific causes.
The fact that a mega-rich member of the 1%, a celebrity from the sports world, is on Capitol Hill demanding that MY money be used for his pet cause makes me wonder how he would like ME appropriating HIS salary for things I want done.
Thoughts?
He po-folk.
Sir:
America elected/re elected a man who campaigned for the Presidency calling me rich, greedy and uncaring. He promised you that he'd address all your needs at my expense.
So now, the US government has hired people to take my money from me, FOR you.
As a result, it is impossible for me to continue my usual contributions to charities of MY choice.
If you need assistance, I suggest you contact the people the government has hired to take my money, on your behalf.
Thank you.
I’m with you. Funding medical research at all doesn’t sound much like government purview to me unless we’re talking about some kind of plague that’s a major national threat.
Ray (like Doc Rivers—good riddance to them both, Celts fans!) is a serious Leftist.
I’ve become pretty jaded with most charities anymore. I tell them I do not give money to them so they can use it to lobby the government for more money.
I give used clothes and household items to Goodwill, and cash to the Salvation Army.
He is appealing to the PRIVATE club that doles out PUBLIC money as if it was their own.
