The better comparison is that the F-35 is really a light attack aircraft along the lines of an A-7. A stealthy one with much better first-shot/first kill air-to-air capability, but not something that should be used as a primary air-supremacy fighter or even as a lightweight fighter.

Based on what I've seen/read it should perform admirably in that A-7esque role. If at a pretty steep price tag.

I’d compare the F-35 to an improved F-16, really. Similar missions to improving defenses.

I do agree that the F22 is needed. Serious mistake not to continue and expand to other countries (e.g., Israel).
