Beachgoers in South America can have a cold Coke and a smile, but unlike other consumers of the world's most popular soft drink, they can drink it directly from a bottle made entirely of ice.

The Atlanta-based company says the “cold to the last drop” bottles "continue to make quite a splash in Colombia and throughout the advertising world."

Indeed, the cool marketing ploy, began this year, has won Coca-Cola several awards.

How does it work?

And about 5 times the environmental impact in energy costs to ship them ‘on demand. Because you either keep them sub frozen or the bottle melts.

Cool as a novelty idea, bad as a eco one.

Edit...either keep them sub frozen and the bottle melts or have frozen soda which won’t sell well.

Not completely original. People have served drinks in ice “glasses” for years.

Not terribly practical but it is a neat novelty.

I drink several cokes a day. I sip them until they get too warm and flat, and then throw them away.

Ice bottles surely won’t work for me!

I just wish they hadn’t destroyed my favorite Tab, by switching from saccharine to whatever is in it now. It destroyed the effervescence and lightness.

Just a publicity gimmick .... the health and contamination issues would force this stuff off the market pretty fast. Doubt if this would be available to the public but rather used mainly for promotional events.

My guess is that the only practical way they could pull this off is to manufacture the frozen bottles as a frozen serving container and ship them separately in a freezer unit and serve the soda from a from a tap with a special nozzle.

Right. But then you have all the added cost of keeping them frozen regardless. That is a cost, both material and environmental that does not exist now.

***** “Cool as a novelty idea, bad as a eco one.” ******

Best Selling Point, Marketing Idea etc...

I’d buy it just because of that.

Now do that with BEER! Then we start talking major $

..... That’s why this type of thing could only be served at special promotional events. This wouldn’t be available to the public because it would have to be served by trained personnel.

just pour some saccharin in, you’ll get the old flavor back.

ahhh, my grandma drank tab. also drank sanka, and smoked, so her taste was questionable at best.

It's a cool idea, but if the bottles have to be kept at minus 13, once the coke has been poured in, it would quickly become a slushie.

Not that there's anything wrong with it, I'm just not into that texture.

I am sooo sick of hearing that shit. GIVE IT A REST!

If someone decides to ship frozen Coke your life will NOT be impacted. Frozen foods etc. are traveling the highways and skyways and have been for decades.

There isn't anything that's "eco friendly" in some twisted narrow minds.

You missed the sarcasm. I have been hammering eco nazis for well over 15 years.

In this case, the eco nuts would fly out of the woodwork to scream bloody murder about the energy costs involved. To which I would reply, “Build more power plants”. But the facts are what they are. If they/coke want to do this to show how green they are, this is a bad idea.
