As a former FL resident, I beg to differ regarding the cigarette butts left on Naples’ beaches. While I will grant the Professor the point on the dangers to wildlife, it sure wasn’t too appealing to have your sandy beach area be full of butts. It’s a beach, not an ashtray. If you want to smoke, it’s outside, so smoke. But just like littering when camping - clean up after yourself. I didn’t leave beer cans or food wrappers behind for the smoker to clean up. Be polite and clean up your detritus.

Well said. Smoking outside, BFD. Littering should get one a Rodney King style beat down.

Well I see beer cans and McDonalds wrappers thrown everywhere.

We have laws against littering.
Some here would beat up beer drinkers or consumers of fast food with taxes and bans, which misses the entire point of your gripe.
Littering is littering.
I see gum stuck all over sidewalks, should we ban gum?

“it sure wasn’t too appealing to have your sandy beach area be full of butts.”

The thing to do, then, is ban filter cigarettes. It’s the filters that seem to endure forever. A butt from an unfiltered cigarette can be field-stripped to nothing in a couple of seconds.

Years back no refunds on beer/pop had no deposit. During vacation in Florida, the beach's were littered with bottles, cans and glass pop containers....It was a lot more disgusting than a cigarette butt, but they changed the law that all soda/beer containers by law had to have a deposit..when the peoples money was concerned they cleaned up after themselves and if they didn't someone else would pick it up for the deposit.....Had an debate with my father when they restored deposit on those container. Being an elderly gentleman he didn't like lugging bottle and cans to the store. I was glad when they did because, as I told my dad, the beaches were lousily with clutter....

When I hear someone complain about cigarette butts, you just bury them in the sand. It just depends on who's ox is being gored....I have found birds pick apart the filter and any paper in building their nests....Know this cause the houses get cleaned out every fall, what kills a lot of birds is those plastic rings around food/drink stuff.'

Years back Michigan dropped the age for drinking to 18. I worked at a bowling alley bar/restaurant and the idiot teens would get drunk and start a fight with some old guy that had been sitting at the bar stool for many years enjoying his beer and the guy would clean their clocks....After a couple of years of problems including increase in DUI teens driving cars they reinstated the drinking age to 21. law...

One of my son's was 18 at the time and made the mistake of coming home drunk and bumping into the walls to get to his room..........after his father woke up and then me, he never came home drunk again....I waited until his father was done with him in the bedroom (only with his mouth), I waited until I figured he has fallen asleep and went into his room, woke him up and then he had to listen to me. Poor kid but needed to find out we aren't a bar and he will never get sleep if he tried that again.....

When cutting my grass with the tractor, I never have to stop to pick up a cigarette butt, but had paper cups, Styrofoam containers from fast food and plastic water bottles...some throw out their garbage in plastic bags out the window also.... I have 600 ft. frontage on a Michigan state road, so it gets lots of traffic at times.

As an adult, smoking may not be liked by some, but for second hand smoke, its all a lie about second hand smoke being dangerous........the study was done by the UN and buried quick when the conclusion was second hand smoke had not been found to effect the health of the nonsmoker...... Gross out special, I found a used condom at the edge of my drive, Always have vinyl gloves for such things, but usually use them when I am stripping furniture, and applying a stain... When I go to peoples home, I don't smoke in their house but will step outside to light up and usually someone else comes out to enjoy their cigarette
