LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) — Hazardous conditions hindered firefighters' attempts Monday to search for some 40 people still missing after a runaway oil tanker train exploded over the weekend, killing at least five people, officials said.

Meanwhile, crews worked to contain oil spilling in the Claudiere River which feeds into the St. Lawrence.

The growing number of trains transporting crude oil in Canada and the United States had raised concerns of a major disaster . . .

And that danger will increase with the failure to approve the Keystone pipeline.

Amazing how this story is a non-event for MSM. Helps when the guy in the WH has a buddy who owns a railroad that transports oil. Thus the reason no Keystone pipeline.

Amazing how this story is a non-event for MSM.

It just affects a bunch of French people who live at the North Pole. Of no consequence as compared to the fate of the Great and Powerful Oz.

40 missing? Looking at the damage it’s hard to imagine that they’re still alive.

It's not difficult to see why it would be a bigger story in Canada than here.Just as it's easy to see what the SFO crash would be bigger here...and in South Korea...than it is in Canada.

The pictures look like the center of town was leveled by bombing. Terrible.

No reports I’ve read have stated where the crude came from and where it was going to.

I’m guessing that it came from Bangor, Maine and was heading to a refinery in Montreal. Does anyone know?

Do Canadian train crews cross the border?

If so this accident could have easily happened on US soil.

UPDATE

I see there is an existing pipeline (60+ years in use) that takes oil from Portland (not Bangor) Maine to Montreal.

It makes the train load of crude next to the US border even more interesting...

According to the Wall Street Journal, it was crude oil being shipped from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota to a refinery in New Brunswick, Canada.

I've been following this, it's a big deal. Way more implications than the plane crash in SF. If for no other reason than I'd imagine it will be a disruptor (good or bad, I dunno) for how oil is currently transported in North America.

If the reporting "journalists" are to be believed, the crude came from North Dakota and was headed for New Brunswick.

Fire crews have crossed the border, as all of the small town volunteer depts from the Maine side have been providing assistance. Good on them, IMHO.

A little local newspaper coverage:

http://bangordailynews.com also has a ton of stuff (including protesters, who never seem to let a crisis go to waste) on its front page.

I’m amazed at how flimsy looking the tanker cars are.

What a tragedy. I wonder if charges will be brought when they find out who, in effect, released the train’s brake.

There are unconfirmed reports that the local fire department shut the engine off, which released the brakes.

8 more bodies found in Lac-Mégantic, raising death toll to 13

You may be right, sadly.
