I think that most people who say “when the fun starts” mean it sarcastically.

I’ve used that expression, as well as “when it drops in the pot”, “when the hits the fan”, “the balloon goes up”, and others.

When I say “the fun starts” I certainly don’t mean clowns and lollipops, I mean it with all the sarcasm I can muster. It helps me cope with the sense of dread.

That may be but I did not get the feeling the poster meant it sarcastically. I’m afraid some take the idea of armed conflict way to lightly. It may come to that, it may even be necessary, but when it happens all around you I guarantee it will not be fun. Usually I hold my comment, but the flippant attitude really bothered me tonight. Getting old and grumpy I guess.
