Dittos. I’ve flown into SFO a lot of times and every time I do I imagine coming in short just like this. Maybe it is just the lack of visual cues that throws off my sense of distance and speed.

I kind of doubt the accuracy of that report. No way a loud pop would be heard before actually seeing the fireball. Plus I see no evidence of cartwheeling or a wing coming off. He just saw something and imagined the rest.

..hardest landing I’ve ever had...MEXICO CITY late 80’s..probably a 12 foot drop, thought the gear was going to come up through the fuselage...a real hard thump!

The debris field looks as if the plane clipped the upper front edge of the breakwater at the start of the runway.

That’s the top of the aircraft burned away in the fire after the crash.

I see Drudge is reporting 2 dead. Sorry to say.

Per another post, back when Mexico use to be a nice place to visit, we flew Aeromexico and Mexicana. Good airlines actually, the pilots would let small children come up into the cockpit I’m pretty sure.

Seems like it took a long time for this to be reported. It supposedly happened at about 11:30 am Pacific time.
Looks like many survived, so that’s great to hear.
Also looks like pilot error - landed too short for the runway. Could have been a lot worse.

"cartwheeling"

I don't think the witness used the right word; this suggests that the plane flipped upside down. But the plane was right-side up, and both wings were attached. I think maybe he meant "pin wheeling," i.e., spinning, rather than cartwheeling or flipping. If it had flipped, I think the wings would have been ripped off and casualties would have been much higher.
