The perverse effects of the law of unintended consequences are striking as social architects seek to make society safer by limiting access to firearms and make society more sober by limiting access to drugs.

The perverse effect of making drugs illegal is to drive up their price because addicts will have their drugs and, in fact, they must have their drugs, that is why they are called addicts. So the degree to which law enforcement is successful in limiting the importation and distribution of illegal drugs, the more law enforcement makes the trade lucrative by driving up the price due to scarcity and, perversely, enticing more people to enter the trade and more addicts to engage in the trade to earn the money to buy drugs made more expensive by the war on drugs.

In short, the more the war on drugs is successful, the more it fails.

Similarly, with a reported 300 million weapons in circulation in our society it is fatuous in the extreme to believe that half measures will deprive determined criminals of access to firearms. By definition, these regulations that Gabby Giffords advocates will reduce access to firearms by law abiding citizens while criminals continue to acquire them as easily, or more easily, than teenagers come by fake ID to make them appear of legal drinking age.

If the real purpose is to make society more safe, the perverse effect will be to make the honest and law-abiding populace less safe and more vulnerable to armed predators unless the hidden intention is to confiscate all guns-which is of course the true object.

A war on weapons means that, until the utopian day when all weapons are in the hands of the Leviathan, the innocents will be victimized. The inevitable perversion will be caused by the law of unintended consequences.

Meanwhile, the utopia of a drug-free, weapon free society is ours to be had after we wage just one more battle in these wars, after we sacrifice one more freedom, after we engross government one more time.
