It's taken me a while to get the courage to expose my lack of knowledge and to actually ask:

Is the ouster of the Morsi a good thing for the US, or a bad thing?

Obama seems to think it's a bad thing, which would normally make it clear to me that it's good for the US... but Obama sounds like it's not ALL that bad...

It’s a good thing because while Morsi was handpicked by Obama, neither of them were interested in supporting or even contributing to US interests. I think this is going to shine a light on Obama and I think he’s been fairly restrained because he’s a little freaked out and wondering if this could happen to him too someday.

But he’s already announced that he’s going to attack them financially. That’s what FDR did to Franco after WWII because he was PO’ed that Franco had kicked out the Commies, even though Franco had helped us greatly by remaining neutral and letting us use the Spanish bases.

But what can I say? Never expect gratitude from a leftist or an Isamist.

Honestly, time will tell. On the face of it, it is a good thing, becasue, as was pointed out Morsi was an anti-American islamist. When you look at the bigger picture, it gets a bit more complicated. Egypt is broke. US aid was being spent as quickly as they received. Tourism, a huge source of income, has all but dried up. The Egyptian military is really in dire straights, as far as being able to maintain its capability. With obama shutting the spigot off, they will turn elsewhere for support. That will come from Russia, China, or both; neither of which have US interests in mind.

Politically, there is no guarantee that Morsi’s replacement will be much better. The country is split pretty evenly between the safalists/islamist crowd and the more secular groups. The military has been infiltrated by the MB. If things go bad again all the above could make the military unable to pull Egypt’s fat out of the fire, yet again.

Like I said, time will tell if this is a good thing for the US. My personal opinion is that obama will do everything in his power to make sure the outcome doesn’t fall in favor of US interests. In fact, I’d wager that when Egypt comes out of the tunnel, the country as a whole will be very anti-US and even more belligerent towards Israel than it has been. That is just my opinion and a truly hope I am wrong.
