The level of ignorance now is such that millions of Americans think the name of Lincoln’s party starts with a big D. Most of those think that the party of George Wallace and white racism starts with a big R. Ignorance is thriving in all states like Kudzu in South Carolina.

Yep. It was the Democrats in the South that enslaved the blacks and used them for free labor long after good Christians realized the ugliness of slavery, and it was the Democrats who kept on trying to oppress the blacks long after they got their buts kicked in the Civil War, through the Jim Crow laws, and through (these days) the massive amounts of welfare.

As far as they are concerned, just because the Civil War ended over a century ago, doesn't mean they can't try and keep blacks enslaved economically through welfare programs.
