"The elder Rubitsky was an honorary Member of the British Empire, MBE, and was invited to Buckingham Palace in London in 2001 to receive his decree, signed by Queen Elizabeth II. He also was regarded a warrior chief by the people of New Guinea, where he served during World War II.
But Rubitsky's own government refused to recognize what those in other countries were certain was true: He killed 500-600 Japanese soldiers while single-handedly guarding a military outpost in Papau New Guinea during the Battle of Buna. Two of his superior officers later nominated Rubitsky for a Medal of Honor, the U.S. military's highest distinction, but too many records from the Battle of Buna, including the number of dead enemy soldiers, were lost or never maintained."
