In part this snub is do to the fact that after the CIB, New Guinea is probably next on forgotten US theaters of WW II. At least in part due to the fact that Gen Macarthur (the Montgomery of the USARMY) Did so much to insure that the only name ever remembered in the theater was of course His.

Might the relative lack of memory of New Guinea from the American point of view be due to the fact that there was more British and Australian participation there than American? Same perhaps with China-India-Burma?

According to always infallible family history, The New Guinea Campaign was fought and won by my father, my father-in-law, and my Uncle Charley, who all somehow wound up with the dear olde 32d. I understand several other fellows and less effective units were involved, some from Australia and Britain, but according to my relatives, they were in the way and constantly underfoot.

My old boss at the power company was also involved. The Japs had no chance. Things were going badly at first, but then MacArthur placed a pal of his, General Eichelberger, in charge, and told him "come back victorious or be dead."
