Study: Electric cars no greener than gasoline vehicles
United Press International ^ | 2013 July 01 | UPI

BERKELEY, Calif., July 1 (UPI) — Electric cars, despite their supposed green credentials, are among the environmentally dirtiest transportation options, a U.S. researcher suggests.

Writing in the journal IEEE Spectrum, researcher Ozzie Zehner says electric cars lead to hidden environmental and health damages and are likely more harmful than gasoline cars and other transportation options.

Electric cars merely shift negative impacts from one place to another, he wrote, and "most electric-car assessments analyze only the charging of the car. This is an important factor indeed. But a more rigorous analysis would consider the environmental impacts over the vehicle's entire life cycle, from its construction through its operation and on to its eventual retirement at the junkyard." ..... < snip >

..... "Upon closer consideration, moving from petroleum-fueled vehicles to electric cars starts to appear tantamount to shifting from one brand of cigarettes to another," Zehner, a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, said. ..... < snip >

Ozzie Zehner, author of "Green Illusions", was once an electric car enthusiast. He even built an electric car, so he knows what he is talking about and understands all phases of manufacture and operation of electric cars.

There are many advantages to electric cars compared to conventional combustion engine (e.g., simplicity of design and quiet operation of the drivetrain) but the electrics are sold by the "environmentalists" and "green" politicians on the phony premises of lower costs of operation, much better mileage and "greenness" ("cheap and clean") without explanation of the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and "environment impact" shifting.

Zehner's detailed article is published in "href="http://spectrum.ieee.org/energy/renewables/unclean-at-any-speed">Unclean at Any Speed: Electric cars don’t solve the automobile’s environmental problems - IEEE Spectrum, 2013 June 30

My husband (a UC Berkeley graduate of the Engineering School) has maintained this all along, but you can’t get the politicians to listen. My husband says it’s because they are all attorneys and never had a chemistry, or science, course.

And they're just now figuring this out? I remember in physics class the first thing the teacher told us young skulls full of mush, for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction. Not to mention, those batteries in the EV and hybrid cars, eventually they need to be replaced. What's the cost effectiveness, not to mention the negative enviro impact compared to overhauling a conventional engine?

Of course, they’re laying the ground-work to ban all private automobiles by saying this. “See, we’re no better off, we should just ban them all...”

This is a direct attack on electric car owners sense of self worth, and I won’t stand for it!

Seriously, feeling self-righteous is 90% of the reason for buying one of these,
and if you point out that their feelings of self-righteousness are misplaced, it’s taken as a personal attack.

The people who think electric cars are “greener” than gas / diesel cars think electricity arrives at the outlet by magic.

You are asking questions that are not polically correct and therefore are verboten.

Of course, anything that "doesn't happen here" like disposal or manufacture is not important for politically correct or ignorant / NIMBY class.

It is because they are politicians and take money from special interest groups to ignore facts.

CA now is paying the highest gas tax in the country not due to a lack of gas but we are using too little with our electric cars and high mileage engines so the government was taking in less tax so, since the issue seemed to be solving itself, the government lost money which can never happen so, they charge us more for using less.

Like the post office.

I believe the king has taken more then his fair share.

Well we have a nation who elected a man who claims the the “planet will boil over” if Africans get cars and air conditioned houses — in Africa!

Same here, my husband is a physics guy, and he goes beserk about all the junk and false science! He’s always said this about electric cars.

I have done several Prius battery replacements. About $3500.00 for a remanufactured battery. I have no idea what goes on in the reman process, or the impact to green worship. Cost, I have a handle on because I understand money. Giia worship, not so much.

Are the simpletons finally figuring out that when you plug in an electric car, SOMEWHERE a power plant in chugging out exhaust from furnaces to generate the electricity?

I found the original article and used that for a new thread.

A bit long to add to the middle of this one.

Of course, they’re laying the ground-work to ban all private automobiles by saying this. “See, we’re no better off, we should just ban them all...”

Incrementally.

Reduce dependence on cars for travel (short hops/short commute/small cargo capacity).

Ween them off the cars for other travel.

Shut down the gas stations.

End domestic oil production.

Ration electricity saying that the grid cannot support it and no new plants will be built.

I provided the direct link to Zehner’s IEEE Spectrum article in post #2.

Thanks for making it a separate thread - it’s definitely worthwhile to see the science (as opposed to phony “consensus”) behind the conclusions.
