I was in the Security Service in the Air Force 50 years ago and we, including the NSA, were spying on friend and foe alike. Phone calls and other communications were being intercepted and relayed to the NSA. This was necessary then and is today. You don’t know who your friends will be down the road so you need to be vigilant.

No worries. They are just spying on Europe for the House of Saud and the Oil Barons of Qatar.

But we DO. And THEY do. We’ve been spying on our friends for as long as we’ve been a nation, as have they. Everybody knows it, mostly we don’t mention it, but it is a fact. And in the intel communities, we don’t really mind up to a point.
