SPANISH FORK (ABC4 News) - Gun enthusiasts in Utah are lacing up their running shoes. It's all for a 5k showing their support for the Second Amendment.
And they'll be running with their guns
From handguns to assault rifles, Utahns wanting to exercise their right to carry firearms in plain view now have another place to do it.
On a 3.1 mile course mapped out in Spanish Fork.
It's called open carry. In Utah, it's legal to openly carry a gun without a permit as long as the owner isn't a felon and the gun is two actions away from being fired.
We don't care about rights we don't know about, said Mcgregor Whiting, race organizer. Whiting, a Utah gun enthusiast wants more people to be aware of their Second Amendment rights. So he along with two friends came up with Run 4 Guns.
It's a 5k race and runners are being asked to come packing.
Running with a gun is only going to be so comfortable and that will depend on the holster carrying it, but we do expect to have a large umber of participants carrying firearms, he said.
In fact, Whiting shows ABC4 Utah's Kim Johnson, he, himself, carries everywhere he goes and will be the day of the race.
Proceeds will be donated to victims of gun violence.
It's all Whiting said, to showcase gun enthusiasts, like him, in a different light.
People who are outspoken and anti-gun, they are defining who we are and what we represent and this 'Run 4 Guns' is really about defining ourselves as a whole body of citizens not just a proactive group or political lobby, he said
The run is scheduled for Sep. 21 in Spanish Fork. To register, click here.
Safety off, rack the slide, pull trigger... oh, that's three actions.
