Citing national security concerns and the war on terror, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked New York Gov. Michael Cuomo to ban the sale of children’s fireworks.
City officials worried that sparklers — handheld fireworks that emit colorful sparks and are often waved through the air by kids on the Fourth of July — could be used in terrorist attacks, according to The New York Post.
“A recent attempt to harm innocent lives provides a frightening example of how legally purchased… Fireworks can cause dramatic harm and even kill,” said Joseph Garba, Bloomberg’s state legislative director, in a statement.

Holy crap, ‘ole Bloomie has finally jumped the shark. I never thought I would see the day - he was doing so well just barely hanging onto a semblance of rational thought, but that has now departed.

What is wrong with this nut? Sparklers have been around forever. Loved them as a kid and still do.

I'm in no way in support of the ban, but truth be told, you can kick of some pretty good explosions with sparklers if packaged correctly. Just look up "sparkler bomb" on youtube.
Yeah, and you could make meth amphetamine out of common OTC cold medicines (before they locked them away from the law abiding).
When we make laws targeted at the lowest common denominators of society, we ALL are adversely affected.

In the book “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter’ Honest Abe made weapons similiar to sparklers from gunpowder. He called them “martyrs.” They would blind the bloodsucker long enough for him to do his ax work.
Maybe Bloomberg is afraid that such things are vampyrephobic, or might be used on Muslims?

Sparkler bombs are far more powerful than people would think. However, banning them is every bit as silly as banning big gulps. I mean really.... who would suggest such stupidity?????
