Charges have been dropped against an EMT who refused to help a dying pregnant woman – because she was on her coffee break!
In 2009, Melissa Jackson was on duty and in uniform when she walked to a nearby coffee shop for her coffee break and discovered that one of the employees was having a severe asthma attack. Jackson called an ambulance, but refused to help the woman. She even refused to go into the back room to see what type of medical care the woman needed.

Obviously a union member.
EMT worker Melisa Jackson, is taken to central booking after her arrest for official misconduct in the death of Au Bon Pain employee Eutisha Rennix.
Aside from the tragedy of two deaths, this person has no remorse for her actions, or lack thereof.
A quick search shows, yep—Melissa’s a Norwegian.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I’m an EMT and honestly there’s nothing an unequipped dispatcher could have done, except show some compassion by remaining with the patient until an ambulance arrived. Never abandon a patient.
Surely, the dispatcher could have checked her airway and attempted to make it easier for her to breathe. At the very least, she could have held her hand and shown some compassion. Heck, even I could have done that, and I have very basic medical training.
Thanks for the picture; but just reading the article already told that story. Even my immigrant neighbors from Africa have told me that when they have to deal with a government agency, they try to get a white person to deal with them because black Americans have such a bad attitude. It’s sad. The comparison could not be more stark, when I see these African immigrants working hard, keeping their property up, striving at work, speaking distinctly, disciplining their children and dressing appropriately.
Could the EMT have done an emergency intubation?
Would you refuse to go help out, even if it was unlikely you could do much to help? I doubt that. I’ll bet you would have been back there in a flash.
Even laying someone’s head back can align the airway better, possibly allowing a better flow of air. Who knows how unskilled people had the woman situated? They may have had her sitting up with chin down on her chest, the absolute worst thing they could have done.
This woman wouldn’t even go back and look. Sorry, toss her in a cell and lose the key as far as I am concerned. What an uncaring a$$hole.
That’s why American blacks hate real Africans. The latter come here, get advanced degrees, raise their kids like tiger moms, and remind the former that the only reason American blacks aren’t succeeding is because of themselves.
THIS is why most EMS agencies have protocols requiring EMTs to bring their food outside. All it takes is one nitwit to ruin their reputation.
You can almost imagine this one jumping on the counter, flaying away, head-snapping, “don be bothern me biach, I’m on ma break.”
Coffee breaks uber alles!
So much for the brotha's and sista's hanging together in the eternal fight against "the man".
We need to bring back shame to this country.
Wouldn’t you feel shame if you had the capability but chose not to assist someone in trouble?
Obviously, this woman has no shame!!
An EMT cannot do any kind of advanced airway. Only an EMT-P can do that
Is that Magic Johnson with one of MooseChelle’s hairpieces?
Black victim, black EMT tech. I wonder how it all would have gone down if it was a white EMT tech that did this.
Thanks for the clarification. I looked it up and cleared up one of my misconceptions. I think the public has the idea that all EMT's are paramedics. If she was just an EMT without the paramedic qualification, there is indeed very little she could have done for the woman, within the bounds of her competence. She could have done things she was unqualified to do, but that would have exposed her to legal and professional liability if the woman had died as a result of her aid.
Thanks, didn’t know about the victim.
I'd say 20 years to life in a Supermax.....
Or an Ayn Rand devotee.
BTW, I hope the perp got plenty of overtime while on coffee break.
That's the most important aspect of the story.
So long as her union position and pension are safe, why make such a fuss over a trivial matter like this?
You forgot your < /sarc > tag. There's nothing to wonder about!
(Cue the kid yelling "THAT'S RAAAACISSSST"!)
Apparently she did call the ambulance:
Jackson called an ambulance, but refused to help the woman.
I think the thrust of the Daily News story is that she lacked the milk of human kindness in refusing to even look at the woman. While I semi-agree with that, I don’t know if she’s taking on liability if she looks at the woman and then decides she lacks the know-how to deal with her medical problem. While I enjoy Monday morning quarterbacking as much as the next guy, this is how she earns her living, and taking on unknown risks that may kill a patient, thereby resulting in suspension and/or being banned for life from the profession is not something a typical accountant or soda jerk has to deal with.
Yep, .... confirmed.... just what I was thinking.
Why is she smiling? Her “fifteen minutes” in a First Wookie wig?
Why would you sue the employer?
How evil do you have to be NOT to make every possible attempt to save a human life even if you are Not a trained EMT??
I’m glad that I believe in a burning Hell.
Good question, why is she smiling?
Thank God. I'm tired of the Amish always being in the news.
