It hardly matters now. They’ll be free go get married in Vermont or California then come here and smugly flaunt their “marriage” in front of all us backwards Catholics here.

Depends on where you live. In states that allow gay marriage, federal benefits will be allowed to gay couples. Not so [as yet] in states that DO NOT allow gay marriage.
However, to be sure, there will be a challenge to not recognizing out-of-state gay marriages in states that do not allow gay marriage - citing the Full Faith And Credit Clause of the Constitution.
